Rivas, Nicaragua

Today at 8:00 a.m. we disembarked on the port of San Juan del Sur in the province of Rivas, Nicaragua. The band of the Emmanuel Moncalo School and our great Nicaraguan guides, Chico and Jimmy greeted us on the dock. We drove for about twenty minutes to reach the small town of Rivas; this town got its name from a Spanish duke who traded the Independence of Nicaragua for a town named after him.

On reaching town, we entered the Rivas Museum, the children dancers from the “El Corazon de Jesus” school had a wonderful show set up for us. Flashes of white skirts and blue and red skirts, cloth hats, and Nicaraguan rhythms invited us to dance with them, and some of us did! The children were beautiful, the weather was sunny, and thus our perfect day went on. Fifteen “pepanos”, man powered tricycles, paraded us around town until we reached the Central Park and the San Pedro Church. Since it is never too early for ice cream, we were invited for some, and then went on for a little, well deserved shopping.

We had lunch at the “Hacienda Amayo” right on the Nicaragua lake, where the two imposing volcanoes of Maderas and Concepcion watched us as silent witnesses of time. We ate, played baseball, and heard a very good lecture on Nicaraguan politics and history, before hopping back on the buses to drive back to our home away from home.
