Tamarindo and Cabo Velas beaches, Costa Rica
A very, very high tide welcomed us to the Tamarindo area this morning, in fact one of the highest tides of the year. Surfing would be good today; indeed, those of us who were early at the bow could see the surfers at their best! The town and beach of Tamarindo are a well-known destination because of its beautiful scenery and the international “ambiance”. While ashore our naturalists led a bird watching walk right through town. Most of us also managed to do some shopping, just the stress killer we needed. While resting from the sun and the shopping, a solitary howler monkey came to an almond tree just two feet from us, how close can one get!
We went back on board to have lunch and, while repositioning the ship to our afternoon destination, most of the children and some of the staff members who could not resist the temptation of a new bandana - painted frozen fish in colorful fashion onto a white fabric (picture above).
Disembarking into an out-of-this-world beach known as Zapotal Bay we were confronted with the difficult decision of choosing between kayaking, flying kites, swimming, snorkeling, and an improvised banana boat ride. The sun was hot, the ocean was warm, and we could share them with our loved ones or our new friends. Life is good!
And to make it better, a humpback whale came to bid our day farewell – breaching in front of the setting sun.
