Los Inocentes

We anchored in a small-protected bay this morning by the small fishing town of Cuajiniquil. Two buses, known locally as coasters, took us through the tropical dry forest in the region of Guanacaste to a sprawling ranch at the base of Orosi volcano known as Los Inocentes. As we traveled through the grassy countryside we saw the droopy eared marble-gray cattle, Cebu, ruminating away the morning. The men that work the cattle in this area, the Sabaneros, are well known for their riding skills on the United States National Rodeo circuit.

We kept busy exploring the tropical dry forest and its inhabitants by horseback, or at a butterflies pace in a wagon pulled by a tractor. Sightings included spider and howler monkeys, a two toed sloth, and literally hundreds of vibrant colored butterflies. It was amazing how these activities worked up our appetites and we enjoyed a delicious barbeque lunch. Our afternoon options included relaxing in hammocks, bird watching, or as many of our guests chose to do, take a dip in the pool and have a cannonball contest.

Upon return to the Sea Voyager we repositioned to a protected cove known as Bahia Santa Elena. The solitude of kayaking was enjoyed as well as an exceptional snorkeling excursion where the highlight was the sighting of a spotted eagle ray.

Costa Rica, whether our explorations are on land or in the coastal waters, there is something new and exciting for everyone.
