Columbia River, Oregon

Today we spent a glorious day sailing up the Columbia River. We had all arrived at the Sea Lion yesterday, many of us flying in from the east coast, and so we were all glad for the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed day. We had a wonderful sunny day as we sailed upriver, passing barges, and side-stepping the dams by utilizing the enormous locks.

Our Historian aboard, Junius Rochester gave a delightful talk on the political and social milieu prevailing when Lewis and Clark began their epic adventure. After the talk, we had such a sunny day we elected to have lunch on the sundeck and watch the scenery roll by, indeed some of us were fortunate to also see some deer at the rivers edge.

We had a quiet time after lunch, translation “nap-time,” and then our second fascinating talk for the day when our Naturalist aboard, David Cothran talked about the unique and dramatic geology of this area. Our first full day aboard was completed by a wonderful and sumptuous feast, when we had a “tastes and treats of the Pacific North-west” buffet, with samples of all manner of foodstuffs, local wines, beers, and so much more. Perhaps everybody could agree, that their favorite item was the “Josephsons maple-wine smoked salmon” so cherished by our Hotel Manager, Judie Blewitt.
