As we travelled "upbay" in Glacier Bay National Park this morning, we saw numerous nesting seabirds, a large group of Steller's sea lions and several bald eagles, scanning all the while for the elusive brown bear, Ursus arctos. Our searching paid off late in the morning with a close up view of a beautiful 600-700 pound animal grazing on beach plants and digging for roots. We spent nearly 20 minutes silently observing this bear, reminded by its presence of the wildness around us.
