Santa Cruz Island
Today we started our day anchoring in Academy bay, an amazing location surrounded by dramatic cliffs and the place were Puerto Ayora is found. Our first visit in the morning was the Charles Darwin Research Center, which is well known for its passionate scientific work in the archipelago and also because it is the home for their notorious Galápagos tortoise breeding center where we observed some of the 650 baby tortoises, all of them kept carefully in their facilities, under the care of some tortoise specialists.
During our morning outing we did experience some typical “Garua” (mist) which gave the islands the famous name of the “Encantadas” or Enchanted islands. For decades this mist covered the islands making navigation around these waters very difficult, the islands “disappeared” as some of the ships approached them; this prevented the archipelago of being colonized earlier.
After this very interesting visit our guests went to town and enjoyed some free time by themselves shopping and exploring. After this we all went to the highlands to have a very delicious lunch, some enjoyed a relaxing walk, others went bike riding and others just played some volley ball or relaxed right next to the swimming pool.
Our visit in the afternoon took us to the “Gemelos” were the unique Scalesia forest and the collapsed craters were just inspiring. After this we went to visit the Galápagos giant tortoises in their natural habitat and some spotted some of the different types of Darwin finches and the vermillion flycatcher. This was an awesome day and by sure we all had a lot of fun.
