Genovesa Island
Genovesa Island is one of the best islands in Galapagos to see birds, especially red-footed boobies.
Today we had a good opportunity to enjoy these birds. Many were nesting and it seems like this year has been a very good one for them. We found many young boobies, and a few are already trying to fly. It was very funny to see all of these young ones on the bushes, watching us pass by.
I told my group that at that young age, boobies think that everything that moves is a fish, so when they learn to fly they are prepared to dive for fish.
This island is the island of birds. We saw swallow-tailed gulls, boobies, frigate birds, and also some land birds like the sharp-billed ground finch, also known as the famous vampire finch. This finch has the behavior of drinking Nazca booby’s blood, in some of the northern Galapagos Islands, like Darwin and Wolf.
During the afternoon we also found a couple of short-eared owls, which, only on this island in Galapagos, are diurnal hunters.
We ended up the day anchored in the caldera of this Island, enjoying a fantastic sunset from the sky deck of the Polaris.
