Genovesa Island
Among the many wonderful bird species found on this island the swallow-tailed gulls shown in the picture of today stand out by their beauty. The stunning elegance of the exquisite combination of colors in their bodies makes this marine bird truly a favorite among our visitors. Black, red, white and grays are perfectly arranged in an artistic fashion.
This season is spectacular for these birds. They are breeding, and all over the island we encounter gull couples incubating their eggs or rearing tiny chicks. I love to observe these chicks. They are so cute! It is also not unusual to have the thrill of observing chicks soliciting their parents for food, usually regurgitated pieces of squid.
Swallow tailed-gulls are not only elegant and pretty, but they are remarkable at the scientific level as well. These gorgeous endemic birds are the worlds’ only nocturnal gulls. They feed at night, avoiding the predatory frigate birds and catching their nocturnal prey of squid.
