Espanola Island

We started our expedition on board the Polaris with very good weather; the sun was shining and the water temperature was perfect. Yesterday we visited Santa Cruz Island and today we have been on Española Island.

We really enjoyed walking along the different booby colonies. We saw the two species of the island, the blue footed boobies and the Nazca boobies. Most of their chicks are getting ready to fly and today we actually saw one of them taking off probably for the very first time in its life. That was a complete show. First the booby moved around checking the wind, then it flapped the wings very fast getting to lift its feet from time to time, and then, suddenly, the bird took off. But it didn’t last much on the wing, so within a few minutes it was back to the ground again.

In the afternoon we had another exciting experience. The snorkeling was at its best! We saw many fish, sharks, manta rays and stingrays. The water temperature was very pleasant therefore we spent more than one hour swimming. It was low tide, and visibility was great.

We also spent some time walking along the beach, enjoying the several sea lions that have chosen that place for their siestas. Our guests were fascinated by the peaceful life of the sea lions that shared their place with birds and human beings today on Española Island.
