Tower Island
Tower Island is spectacular in itself due to its location. Knowing that you are sitting in the middle of a volcano that was once erupting, spewing tons of matter into the sky is a humbling feeling. Every rock, crevice, hill and geological landmark for that matter is a wonder. The addition of the amazing quantities and variations of wildlife is equally astounding. The birds gracefully take to the air, diving for fish to feed the young. The marine life parallels the thousands of birds with a satisfying equivalence. From the schools of yellow-tailed surgeonfish to the speckled sea turtles to white tipped reef sharks, it is easy to see that life at the Galapagos Islands flourishes. For me, the highlight of the trip was in the water. Swimming with over twenty sea turtles at one time will forever be an unforgettable experience. These ancient creatures reminded me of the earliest stages of life and took my imagination back to prehistoric times. I no longer found myself in present day, but cast off in a distant land where the Internet, telephones, and even modern day life in general could not reach me. The turtle captured in the picture above is a great example of two worlds coming together.
