Bartolome & Santiago Islands
Galapagos is the definitive place to see spectacular things underwater. There are so many marine species, including sea lions, sharks, penguins, marine iguanas, sea turtles and diving blue-footed-boobies. During our snorkeling sessions today, we got to see all these species. Each species is beautiful in its own way, but the spectacular show of the boobies diving just three feet from us, provided an unparalleled memory… arguably the best experience under water of any kind or any time. Today’s photo shows the bubble stream and a blue-footed booby trying to catch a fish. The booby splashed into the water beside me while I was snorkeling.
Both at Bartolome & Santiago, the number of blue-footed boobies was incredible. They were in a feeding frenzy that also included sea lions, brown noddy terns, Audubon shearwaters, frigate birds and bonito tuna. All these predators were going after a huge school of small brown striped-salema. No doubt the upwelling of the cold water currents is bringing in so much productivity that all our marine species are going to have a fantastic and successful breeding cycle.
