Genovesa Island

A wonderful end for a memorable week! Today all of us were truly delighted with this small island. With a surface area of just 5.4 square miles, Genovesa Island holds an incredible number of birds. It is estimated that close to one million birds call this island home. A real seabird paradise!

Red-footed boobies, Swallow-tailed gulls and frigate birds among many other species either fly, nest or perch everywhere you see. Sometimes you feel that you do not have any place left that is not occupied by a bird. If you are a bird lover, Genovesa will bewitch you. Not only can you observe many bird species but you can note their behavior as well. Some of them, like the Galapagos mockingbird shown in the picture, are extremely curious. Some are totally indifferent and let us be part of their lives. Genovesa Island is a true jewel in the natural world. It is a place completely untouched by human beings. There are no introduced animal or plant species on this remote landmass. To spend a day on this island is like living a fantasy. A dream come true, one in which animals interact with humans just like in a idyllic Garden of Eden.
