Sao Miguel, Azores

Bemvindo a Portugal!

After coming aboard, some adventurous travelers took time out and visited the town of Ponta Delgada, the capital of the island of Sao Miguel (as well as the capital of the Regiao Autonoma dos Azores —the Azores Autonomous Region). Churches and other buildings beautifully decorated with the black basalt stones, narrow streets with a cobble stone pavement, and the sympathy of the Azorean people was a warm welcome to the archipelago.

In the afternoon, the amazing natural beauty of the Sete Cidades lakes awaited all the travelers. A bus ride from the south side of the island to the northwest side, past some beautiful scenery —well worth the pictures taken—brought us to the village of Sete Cidades (the Seven Cities). Like other places in the Azores, Sete Cidades is a friendly village with a slow pace where the inhabitants stop what they are doing to make small talk on the corners before getting back to their work around the house (photo above), in the fields, or with their animals. After visiting Sete Cidades, a short walk from the seven arches bridge took everyone out on the peninsula that offers a magnificent lookout of the lakes, where we could appreciate some colorful flora and birds. At the end, a picnic with bread and cheese from the region along with other good food was waiting for the guests. After this festive end, we went back on board.

At 6 p.m. sharp, the Endeavour set sail for the Atlantic Ocean where more excitement awaits us.
