Sandfjord
The Top of the Top. It started as a simple “long walk”, but those that have previously participated in similarly named excursions on this cruise probably knew that the event was likely to be adventurous. After landing on the blindingly white beaches of the appropriately named Sandfjord, we headed inland across the gently rolling tundra and made our way past patient glacial lakes, rivers in a hurry, and stunted trees. Reindeer scampered across our path, possibly scattering some of the wee lemmings that frequent this habitat. After pausing at a vantage point to discuss the intended route, the group split and 11 of the most intrepid/craziest continued upwards on a “path” that eventually involved 2 river crossings, lots of angular rock-hopping, a flush or ptarmigan, and the stunning vista pictured here. This is the view from the mountaintop at the top end of Europe.
