Spend three days discovering the largest island in the Azores, wandering the historic streets of Ponta Delgada, taking in the breathtaking vistas of Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo, and experiencing local traditions that have flourished here for generations—from handcrafted ceramics to pineapple cultivation. Along the way, gain a deeper appreciation for the remarkable landscapes and enduring culture that define this remote Portuguese archipelago.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Ponta Delgada, Azores

Arrive in Ponta Delgada and transfer to the Grand Hotel Açores Atlantico (or similar). This evening, gather with fellow travelers for a welcome reception before enjoying the remainder of the evening at leisure to relax or begin exploring São Miguel's charming waterfront and historic center.

Day 2 - Ponta Delgada / Sete Cidades

Set out on a guided exploration of Ponta Delgada, strolling through the city's historic center to admire the 16th-century church of São Sebastião, the iconic Portas da Cidade (city gates) and the grand public square of Campo de São Francisco. Continue to the Carlos Machado Museum's Sacred Art Collection, where centuries of religious art offer insight into the island's cultural and spiritual heritage.

After lunch at a local restaurant, journey west to the volcanic landscapes of Sete Cidades, one of the Azores' most spectacular natural wonders. From scenic overlooks—including Vista do Rei and Lagoa de Santiago—take in sweeping views of the island's famed twin crater lakes while learning about the geology and biodiversity that shaped this remarkable landscape. This evening, gather for dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Ponta Delgada marina. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Ribiera Grande, Lagoa do Fogo / Embark Shop

After breakfast, visit Cerâmica Vieira, where skilled artisans continue São Miguel's centuries-old pottery traditions. Continue into the protected landscapes of Lagoa do Fogo Nature Reserve, pausing at Pico da Barrosa before taking in the breathtaking crater lake, one of the Azores' most pristine volcanic landscapes.

Continue to Ribeira Grande, the island's historic second city, for a guided walk through its elegant streets before lunch at a local restaurant. Before embarking the ship, visit a pineapple plantation to discover the island's unique greenhouse cultivation methods and sample artisanal pineapple liqueur, a distinctive local specialty. Transfer to the port to embark the ship. (B,L)
