Expedition Spotlight: Icelandic Culture on Flatey Island

“For centuries, Flatey Island has been a center of culture and art in Iceland, and it gives me great pleasure to help people more deeply understand what is there,” says Birna Imsland, Naturalist and Cultural Specialist aboard our Iceland itineraries. Only one and a quarter miles long, the tiny island shelters some fascinating artifacts that include the Book of Flatey, a medieval manuscript recounting the region’s history, and unique fresco murals painted on the ceiling of its nearly century-old church.
