Marquesas to Hawaii Extension

Take to the sparkling seas of the Pacific and follow in the path of the ancient Polynesian Wayfinders. Learn about this incredible skill and about the Polynesian people from our onboard Cultural Specialists, Tua Pittman and Christina Thompson. Work with National Geographic Expert (and Native Hawaiian) Keolu Fox to discover more about the links between human genetic variation and disease in underrepresented populations. Learn photography tips from National Geographic Photographer Randy Olson, whose work has focused on disappearing cultures. Spend time on the bridge with our knowledgeable officers and learn about modern day navigation and chart plotting, as you cross the Equator from southern to northern hemispheres. Take time to marvel at the largest body of water on the planet—the Pacific Ocean. Continue north to the Hawaiian Islands and join us for two days exploring the Big Island of Hawaii and the incredible history and nature that embody this paradise. Learn about Captain Cook’s last, fateful visit and explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park along with spectacular Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world.

Day 9 | Hiva Oa, Marquesas, French Polynesia

 

We conclude our exploration of the Marquesas Islands at Hiva Oa. Visit ancient petroglyphs and witness a spectacular dance performance at a Marquesan me’ae, or hike up the valley with the naturalists and local guides in search of rare birds and spectacular views. At Hiva Oa, we plan to land at Atuona. We’ll visit the village of Puamau to explore a well-maintained Marquesan sacred site, a me’ae Iipona. Accompanied by our team and knowledgeable local guides, we’ll learn about religious rites, and photograph one of the largest, most arresting ancient tikis in Polynesia. Return to National Geographic Orion in the late afternoon as we set a course northward. MEALS: B,L,D

Days 10-15 | At Sea

 

Settle into life aboard National Geographic Orion and enjoy the daily rhythms at sea as we navigate the Pacific. Spend time with your fellow travelers, stop by the bridge to meet the Captain and his officers, or join our naturalists on deck to scan for marine mammals and seabirds. Attend engaging talks on a wide range of subjects—from Polynesian wayfinding to the science of marine protected areas to the cultures of native peoples. MEALS: B, L, D DAILY

Days 16-18 | Exploring Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i, U.S.

 

Arrive at the Big Island of Hawai’I, disembark National Geographic Orion, and spend three days exploring its flora and fauna. Venture into Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park—a geologic wonderland centered on the smoldering crater of Kīlauea. Hike, walk, or explore the visitor’s center to learn about the 70 million years of volcanic activity that has formed the park’s otherworldly landscapes. Ascend Mauna Kea volcano to 9,200 feet and learn about the famous Keck, Subaru, and Gemini observatories, or choose a birdwatching hike to see the native habitat of the endangered palila. Before you depart, join us for a thrilling night snorkel among some of the largest manta rays in the world. MEALS: B, L, D daily

Day 19 | Kailua-Kona/ Home

 

Transfer to Kona airport for your flight home. MEALS: B
