Palouse River, Lower Monumental Dam

Oct 07, 2018 - National Geographic Quest

In the early light, National Geographic Quest dropped anchor on the Snake River at its confluence with the Palouse River. We were soon launching Zodiacs and kayaks as we prepared for our morning expeditions and exploration of this remote area. In the afternoon and evening, following this busy morning, we relaxed as we cruised down the Snake and enjoyed some educational presentations on the great Ice Age floods, photography, and the science of dams.

Grace Winer

Naturalist

Geologist and naturalist, Grace is a native of Montana and received her degrees in geology (B.S. and M.Sc.) from Montana State University.  Funded by a grant from the National Geographic Society, she pursued her master’s degree in Alaska’s remote Pribilof Islands.  Here she investigated the volcanic evolution of St. Paul Island, creating a geologic map, and predicting volcanic hazards in the event of a future eruption.  Her knowledge of the Pribilof Islands and the Bering Sea region led to her work as a consulting geologist on St. George Island for NOAA’s Pribilof Restoration Project.
