Supay and Yarapa Rivers

Jul 14, 2018 - Delfin II

This morning, our group decided that we loved this area so much—especially the magical early mornings here—that we would stay longer. The Yarapa River was amazing—full of wildlife and with perfect light for our photographers.

A couple interesting things occurred today. The water is so low this time of the year that getting into one of the tributaries was a bit of a challenge for our expert skiff drivers. They made it look easy, but the feeling of adventure and exploration added to the experience. Along the way, we spotted a family of noisy yellow-headed caracaras fighting over a dead fish at the river’s edge. The caracaras are so used to stealing food from other birds that they couldn’t help fighting among themselves.

Between the caracaras, there was a lot of screaming, flapping, pouncing, and threatening with menacing, opened bills. All this was particularly funny because the commotion attracted a young great black hawk. At twice the size of the caracaras, the hawk swooped in and grabbed the fish. It’s always amazing to witness the interesting interactions of nature!

About the Author

José Calvo

Naturalist/Certified Photo Instructor

Nicknamed “Indio” (Indian) because of his powers of observation and quiet nature, José has almost two decades of experience working as a naturalist and photography guide; as well as being recognized as an expert birder and nature photographer in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is rich in biodiversity — over 893 bird species have been recorded in the country. Since very young José spent all of his free time in the outdoors in the forest, where he soon fell in love with the birds. He particularly enjoys listening to their calls, and watching their behavior. Oddly enough, another one of Jose’s passions is science and technology, and because of this, he was among the first in Costa Rica to experiment with digital photography. As the technology quickly improved so did his love for it.  He truly believes that nature photography is the perfect combination of both of his passions.
