Kerstin Langenberger

The polar regions have shaped Kerstin's career and continue to inspire her work. Originally from Germany, she now considers Iceland her second home, where she earned a degree in environmental sciences. She later spent a year on Svalbard training as an Arctic Nature Guide. Since then, Kerstin has worked aboard expedition ships in both polar regions, helping guests better understand these rapidly changing ecosystems. The quote often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, "Be the change you wish to see in the world," reflects her commitment to nature and conservation. In addition to working as a hut warden and ranger in Iceland, she spent a year supporting conservation projects in New Zealand, joined the crew of Greenpeace's flagship Rainbow Warrior in Scandinavia and spent two summer seasons on South Georgia, where she supported the work of the South Georgia Heritage Trust.

During the winter, Kerstin works as a professional nature photographer and lecturer. Her best-known photograph of an emaciated polar bear prompted millions of people to reflect on climate change. Her work has also been published worldwide in international magazines and recognized in nature photography competitions. She has written and photographed several books, delivered a TEDx talk and continues to tour German-speaking countries with presentations on the European Arctic, South Georgia and climate change.
