Carlos Calvo Obando

Based in Costa Rica, Carlos has spent 20 years as a freelance wildlife photographer, photography instructor and certified naturalist guide. He leads groups throughout the country’s beaches, jungles and mountains, combining his knowledge as a naturalist with his skills in outdoor photography. He has led photography tours for all experience levels, from beginners to advanced photographers, working with local tour operators as well as leading private tours and workshops. His approach emphasizes practical techniques, careful observation and a sense of humor while helping guests photograph both elusive wildlife and familiar species.

Carlos believes photography offers an opportunity to learn something new every day. He continually challenges himself to create stronger, more impactful images while sharing his knowledge to help others improve their photography and better understand their cameras in the field.

When not on tour, Carlos lives in San José, Costa Rica, with his wife Alexandra, daughter Sofía and son Sebastián. He enjoys spicy food and watching soccer games. He has independently published calendars and postcards and is currently working on a book about Costa Rican wildlife photography hotspots. His photography has also been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Costa Rica.
